The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has taken a significant step forward with the launch of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), and we at Credo AI are honored to announce our full participation in this initiative, continuing our longstanding partnership with NIST.

To learn more about AISIC's work and impact in promoting trustworthy AI and how Credo AI will support their mission, keep reading!

What is the NIST AI Safety Consortium Institute?

On February 8, in accordance with the requirements outlined in the Executive Order of October 30, 2023 (The Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence), NIST formally launched the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC)

The primary mission of the AISIC will be to establish a new measurement science that will enable the identification of proven, scalable, and interoperable measurements and methodologies to promote the development of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its responsible use.

Additional information on this Consortium can be found here

Credo AI is a full participant of the AISIC

As contributors to the development of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (NIST AI RMF) and participants at its official launch in the U.S. Department of Commerce, we at Credo AI are honored to be a full participating member of the Consortium, and to continue our partnership with NIST in the AISIC.

We have operationalized the NIST AI RMF in our software platform, providing enterprises with the ability to map, measure, manage, and govern their AI use cases with ease. Our NIST AI RMF Policy Pack provides a straightforward approach to implementing continuous governance and accountability that aligns with best AI/ML lifecycle practices. With Credo AI, you'll benefit from a seamless solution for managing the NIST AI RMF, including the ability to:

  • Track and drive the NIST AI RMF adoption across all internal teams.
  • Demonstrate compliance with customers and the market.
  • Reduce overall AI risk exposure through adherence to a best-practice risk management framework created by a standard-setting body.

Our work at Credo AI closely aligns with the AISIC vision of a comprehensive approach to AI safety. Only through a multidisciplinary, human-centered approach advancing socio-technical evaluations, technical guardrails, policies, and governance processes, can we ensure AI’s benefits are universally accessible while addressing the full spectrum of its risks.

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards fostering safe and trustworthy AI systems globally. By contributing our expertise in AI governance and risk management, we are committed to supporting the Consortium's mission to develop robust, scalable, and interoperable methodologies for AI safety.

The Opportunity to Overcome AI Governance Challenges with AISIC

Numerous organizations worldwide have started their AI Governance journey to adopt AI and Generative AI. However, based on our experience of working with SMEs to large enterprises, many still face challenges in governing their AI systems effectively, including difficulties in identifying and managing risks, immature governance processes, and a lack of expertise in technical approaches to responsible AI, particularly concerning Generative AI.

The work of AISIC can begin to address these gaps for enterprises, paving the way for a more responsible and innovative AI ecosystem.

Standardizing these practices is also critical for a trusting, vibrant ecosystem of AI tools. Most enterprises are building applications that make use of one or more third-party AI systems, including general-purpose foundation models. Integrating these AI systems poses challenges for procurement, as well as the developers tasked with the comprehensive evaluation of their applications. At Credo AI, we have seen firsthand how transparency and disclosure reporting and clear risk management practices throughout the AI development life cycle eases these challenges and encourages responsible practices to materialize at all points in the AI lifecycle.

In Conclusion

Through this partnership, we can collectively advance the science of AI safety, promote responsible AI practices, and ensure that AI technologies benefit all of society. Credo AI looks forward to continuing to work alongside NIST and other Consortium members to shape the future of AI, ensuring it is developed and deployed in a manner that is secure, fair, and transparent.
